RECT C NOV 18
Hong-Kong, 29th, August, 1898.
I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter
of the 5th. instant regarding the term of years to be granted
in future grants of leases of ground in the Colony and asking
my views on the subject.
I am enabled only to reply to your enquiry as
the Procurator of the Society of Missions Etrangères, as it is
in that office alone that I, on behalf of the said Society hold lands in the Colony.
As such Procurator and for those succeeding to
the office I am averse to leases being granted to the Missions
in that portion or district of the Colony where leases have
already been granted for terms of 999 years, for a less term of years than previously granted, viz.,999 years.
It is for the purposes of the Missions work
that lands are held here, and any buildings the Missions erect, are erected for the purpose and use of Missions only, and are
likely to be held for many years as such. I instance the form-
er French Mission house (Procure des Missions Etrangeres
Staunton Street) which was built for the sole use of the Mis-
sions and was occupied as such for some 43 years. It was only The Hon.R.D.Ormsby,
Director of Public Works.
